Iván Adriano Zetina Ríos (Mexico City, 1985) is a composer, guitarist, and musicologist trained at the UNAM Faculty of Music. He holds a master’s degree and a PhD in Music and Musicology from Sorbonne University. His dual work as performer and composer has been shaped by advanced studies across Europe, with formative residencies at the Accademia Chigiana (Italy), the Conservatoire de Boulogne-Billancourt (France), the Impuls Academy (Austria), and the Darmstädter Ferienkurse (Germany), as well as artistic explorations in Cuba, Serbia, Israel, and the Netherlands.
As a composer, he began his career in theater and film through collaborations with experimental collectives in Mexico and France. He won first prize at the international competition Écoute 2017 for Perceptions, and his works have been performed by leading ensembles across Europe, Latin America, and Russia. His music has been featured at prominent festivals and venues, including Impuls Festival (Austria), Transart Festival (Italy), CMMAS (Mexico), (Pro)Stranstvo XII (Russia), and Foro Internacional de Música Nueva (Mexico). His works are published by Babel Scores, and in 2023 he was inducted into Mexico’s National System of Art Creators.
As a performer, he has collaborated with renowned composers such as Pierluigi Billone, Julio Estrada, Marcelo Toledo, Samuel Cedillo, Luciano Azzigotti, Camilo Méndez, Erika Vega, Sofia Avramidou, Giulia Lorusso, and Elena Rykova. He has performed at international festivals in Sweden, Belgium, Germany, the United States, Argentina, Uruguay, and Chili. In Mexico, he was a member of the Collective Vorágines (2017–2019) and contributed to the creation of Ensamble Zictra (2025), both projects focused on contemporary Mexican and Latin American repertoire. In 2022, he participated in the recording of Simplemente un río by Germán Romero, collaborating with performers including Alexander Bruck (viola), Wilfrido Terrazas (flute), and Iván Manzanilla (percussion). The same year, he was invited to collaborate with Ufa Sextet on the project Asymptotic Freedom II, performing at the Institute for Computer Music and Sound Technology in Zurich and at the Contemporary Music Society in Lausanne, Switzerland. In 2023, he performed with the ensemble Black Page Orchestra in the concert Halucinatio at the Musikverein in Vienna, Austria.
As a musicologist, Iván Adriano has lectured at institutions including the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain), Nova University Lisbon (Portugal), University of Tübingen (Germany), University of Manchester (UK), IRCAM (France), and the Arabic and Mediterranean Music Center (Tunisia). From 2019 to 2025, he taught musicology at University Paris 8 Saint-Denis, Lille University, Sorbonne University, and Paris-Saclay Évry University.
